England and Wales Placed in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by sporting icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Key Group Draws

The Irish and Scotland also share a pool once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks until the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools play out according to the current global standings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both England and Ireland until the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
